The mediators of mood are neurotransmitters. When neurotransmitters become unbalanced it causes a variety of psychological conditions, including sadness, compulsive thoughts, inability to concentrate, mood swings and depression.

Neurotransmitters – are hormone-like chemicals that work on the central nervous system and affect not only the brain, but the entire body. Neurotransmitters are messenger chemicals that create feelings, stimulate thoughts and trigger memories. There are three important neurotransmitters to know about. Serotonin – norepinephrine – dopamine. More below.

Six hormones and chemicals associated with mood and emotion

• 1   Dopamine

This neurotransmitter feeds the reward pathway in the brain, and is involved in motivation, drive, pleasure and addiction. Abnormally high levels of dopamine are linked to loss of contact with reality, delusions and lack of emotion, while low levels have been associated with addictive behaviour and risk taking. Dopamine – and its derivative, norepinephrine – are considered a single chemical. This is the energizing, “gas pedal” chemical that promotes increased feelings of pleasure, alertness, wakefulness, assertiveness and aggressiveness. This chemical heightens energy, speeds up thoughts and improves muscle coordination. It steps up your good mood. However, too much norepinephrine causes anxiety and aggression, stimulates violent behaviors, and causes schizophrenia, paranoia and psychosis. Hence the need for balance and right function in the output of this neurotransmitter – MoodStepUp Tonic will help you to maintain this positive mood balance. One of the easist and fastest ways to alter these neurotransmitters is by your herb and food choices. Don’t go for drugs to do this work; herbs keep in-tune with your body without side-effects and help the body itself to restore its normal healthy output of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter essential for a correctly functioning nervous system, especially the brain. Dopamine distributes messages about pleasure, pain and muscle movements between nerve cells. Certain herbs can help your body produce dopamine, and you also can use MoodStepUp Tonic to counteract the effects of low dopamine levels in your body. Low dopamine levels can cause several adverse psychological and physical conditions.

•  2  Noradrenaline

Chemically related to adrenaline, this neurotransmitter is a stress hormone that co-ordinates the fight-or-flight response. It mediates many of the physical components of emotion, including raised heart rate, and also acts in the brain enhancing alertness, cognition and decision-making behaviour.

• 3   GABA

Gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain – it decreases nerve transmission, allowing neurons time to recover. Increased GABA activity in the brain relieves anxiety and reduces stress.

• 4   Serotonin

First recognised for its ability to constrict blood vessels, serotonin has become widely known as the “happiness hormone.” Chemically known as 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), increasing the available serotonin level in the brain is the main target of the most commonly used antidepressants. Key words are well being and peacefulness. Serotonin boosts feelings of optimism, self esteem, relaxation, and security. Adequate levels ensure good concentration and deep sleep. The more serotonin you have, the less pain and self-incrimination.

• 5   Beta-endorphin

Endorphins are natural opioids, produced by the body in response to pain, excitement and even exercise. Beta-endorphin binds to the same mu-receptors as the pain-relieving drug morphine. These receptors, present on nerves in the brain and spinal cord, modulate the activity of nerves, causing mild sedation, relieving pain and giving a sense of wellbeing.

• 6   Oxytocin

Often described as the “bonding hormone”, the “trust hormone”, or sometimes even the “love hormone”, oxytocin is unique to mammals. Although research is still in its infancy, oxytocin is thought to play an important role in human intimacy, childbirth, sexual arousal, trust and pair bonding.

Foods rich in protein boost dopamine and norepinephrine within minutes, causing increased alertness, speeding up thoughts, and increasing assertiveness. A three ounce serving of fish, red meat, chicken, turkey or eggs boosts dopamine/norepinephrine in less than 30 minutes. Beans and legumes, fermented soy like tempeh and miso, and beverages like coffee (found to speed up transmitters, speed thoughts, improve reaction time and mental functioning and enhance mood after a 20 year study.), black tea, green tea and milk all boost dopamine and norepinephrine. Seeds and nuts such as sunflower, pumpkin and milk thistle also boost dopamine and norepinephrine levels.

Herbs that are known to improve dopamine levels and other key mood enhancers include ginseng, baical scullcap, damiana, dang gui (Angelica sin.), nettles, he shu wu (fleece flower root), red clover, fenugreek, dandelion and peppermint. The most effective method of medical herbalism is the use of multi-herbal mixtures to achieve a consistent action on these neurotransmitters to effect permanent change without dependance. Herbactive’s mixed herbal health tonic for raising dopamine/seratonin levels (and your mood/outlook on life) is MoodStepUp Tonic.

Activities that enhance these “gas pedal” neurotransmitters include listening to rock & roll music, the louder the better, any rush of activity, tennis or any action sport like five side football, tag, sprinting, rock climbing, and attending a fair or exciting shows, etc.

Foods rich in complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, including rice, oats, corn, millet and buckwheat help sustain and boost serotonin levels, and thus a sense of well being and calm and increased concentration, confidence and relaxation. But don’t indulge in these because they can cause bloating and excess flatulance. Other foods that boost neurotransmitters and especially serotonin levels include fresh vegetables, especially root crops, squash and fresh fruits. Apples are noted for bringing oxygen to the brain and being rich in complex carbohydrates and B vitamins, critical nutrients for balanced serotonin levels. Serotonin-boosting snacks include popcorn, tortilla & corn chips, and natural sweeteners like maple syrup, honey and rice syrup. Chocolate beans contain PEA, called the molecule of love. Chocolate stimulates the central nervous system and acts like a natural antidepressant. But too much depresses it. NB I don’t recommend these snacks too often as the sugars in them can take you to a peak and then drop you like a lead balloon.

Herbs that help boost neurotransmitters and especially serotonin levels include oatstraw, which is loaded with B vitamins, and the roots of angelica, burdock, dandelion, ginseng, wild yam and black cohosh. Cannabis, long called the “giver of joy”, significantly raises serotonin levels – this is not in the tonic! Our ‘giver of joy’ is MoodStepUp Tonic – safer and normalizing.

Activities that enhance neurotransmitters and especially serotonin levels include gentle yoga or tai chi, walking, stretching, being in nature, sunshine, clear skies, mild wind, prayer (you don’t have to believe in gods and angels to pray – it’s an inner supplication with your personal identity) and meditation. Rain and dark wintry weather can cause a decline in serotonin levels. Talking with a compassionate person or writing to oneself in a journal is very healing and boosts immunity as well as serotonin levels.

These and other herbs known for their natural and safe mood enhancement are in the MoodStepUp Herbal Health Tonic.

Serotonin is regulated by two forms of gene, long and short. The short form is more likely to lead to depression. People born in Britain and USA tend to inherit the short form of the gene, hence they come low on the happiness scale. Denmark and Netherlands are countries with people with the highest proportion of people with the long gene, and are happiest.
